Founded in 1975, the British Association for Canadian Studies (BACS) is one of the member associations of the International Council for Canadian Studies, of which it was a founder member in 1981. BACS welcomes applications for membership from anyone with an interest in the study of Canada. BACS aims to function as a forum and meeting point for Canadian Studies in Britain. Its annual conference combines a wide range of topics and distinguished speakers with an informal and friendly atmosphere. Attended by delegates from the UK, Canada and Europe, in recent years conferences have been held in York, Belfast, Leeds and Cambridge. The 2007 conference, From Blueberries to BlackBerries: Traditions and Technologies in Canada was held at St Aidan's College, University of Durham in the beautiful cathedral city of Durham, once home of the Prince Bishops.
The theme of the 2009 annual conference, which will take place at the St Anne's College, University of Oxford, UK (28-30 March 2009) is Being, Becoming and Belonging: Multiculturalism, Diversity and Social Inclusion in Modern Canada. St Anne's, founded in 1952, and situated within 5 acres of delightful grounds, is within comfortable walking distance of the centre of Oxford.
